Which Type of Basin Should You Choose?
The installation type is usually the first decision to make when choosing a bathroom basin — it determines how and where the basin mounts, how much pipework is visible or concealed, which tap types are compatible, and how much floor space is freed up. Getting the installation type right before buying saves return costs and installation delays. All basins require a bottle trap or p-trap waste for drainage — check whether this is included or needs to be added to your order. Bathroom Republic stocks five main basin types, summarised below.
Browse by Basin Type
- Full-Pedestal Basins — the pedestal runs from floor to basin, concealing all waste and pipework. Traditional in style, suits classic or period bathrooms.
- Wall-Mounted Basins — fixed directly to the wall with no floor support. Floor stays clear, making the room easier to clean and feel more open.
- Cloakroom Basins — compact wall-mounted and pedestal options from 360 mm wide, designed for small cloakrooms and tight en-suite layouts.
- Counter-Top Basins — vessel-style basins that sit above a worktop surface. Require a tall basin tap — standard taps are not compatible.
- Corner Basins — shaped to fit into a corner to maximise usable floor area, available in wall-mounted and pedestal options.
Size and Specification Checklist
Once you have chosen a type, check: basin width (360 mm to 700 mm), projection depth (front-to-wall distance), the number of tap holes (usually one or three), and whether a waste is included or sold separately. Counter-top basins specifically require a tall basin tap — standard taps will not reach. For a basin supplied with fitted furniture, browse Vanity Units or Countertop Vanity Units for combined basin and storage options.
