Understanding Wall Panel Types
Wall panels for bathrooms and wet areas are sold in several distinct types — each designed for a specific room, surface or level of water exposure. Choosing the wrong type can lead to poor performance over time, particularly in high-moisture environments such as shower enclosures and steam rooms. The four main types available at Bathroom Republic are bathroom wall panels, shower wall panels, bathroom ceiling panels and bedroom wall panels. While all four use similar PVC panel construction and come in the same design finishes — marble-effect, slate, wood gloss and glitter — they are distinguished by thickness, moisture rating and recommended application.
Which Type Do You Need?
Shower wall panels are the most specification-critical type — they should be 10mm thick for rigidity inside an enclosure, and fully waterproof for continuous water exposure. Standard bathroom wall panels are suitable for general bathroom use including areas around baths, basins and shower splashback zones, typically in 5mm or 6mm. Bathroom ceiling panels are engineered for overhead installation in high-condensation environments — standard wall panels should not be used on ceilings in wet rooms. Bedroom wall panels provide a decorative cladding option for dry rooms, using the same PVC panel system without the need for waterproofing. Panels in all categories are available in 5mm, 6mm and 10mm thicknesses — check the product listing for the recommended thickness per application. Trims and fitting strips are available separately to finish exposed panel edges at corners and joins, and should be ordered in the same finish as the panels for a consistent result.
