What Is an Inset Basin?

An inset basin, also called a drop-in basin, is set into a cutout in a worktop so that the rim sits flush on the worktop surface. Unlike a counter-top vessel basin which stands proud of the surface, an inset basin drops down into the worktop and creates a smooth, integrated edge all around. The cutout must be made to the basin's exact template — most inset basins are supplied with a cutting template or dimensions to mark out the shape before cutting. Inset basins work with stone, marble, solid surface and tiled worktops, and are available in rectangular profiles with one or two tap holes. A silicone bead applied around the rim during installation seals the joint between basin and worktop.
