Which Shower Valve Type Do You Need?

A shower valve is the temperature and flow control unit in a shower installation. Bathroom Republic stocks 68 shower valves across four types — bar, exposed, concealed and bath shower mixer — each suited to a different plumbing setup and installation method.

4 Shower Valve Types Explained

• Bar Shower Valves: A surface-mounted thermostatic bar valve fitted inside a shower enclosure. The valve body and supply pipes sit on the wall surface — no wall chasing required. Typically paired with a slider rail kit or riser rail.
• Exposed Shower Valves: A valve where both the body and supply pipework are visible on the wall. Common in traditional bathrooms and over-bath installations where concealing pipework inside the wall is not possible.
• Concealed Shower Valves: A valve where the body is installed inside the wall cavity during first fix, leaving only the control plate visible on the surface. Requires chasing pipework into the wall.
• Thermostatic Bath Shower Mixers: A valve fitted to the bath that diverts water between a bath tap spout and a shower outlet. Used in bath-and-shower setups rather than dedicated shower enclosures.
