What Are Horizontal Radiators?

Horizontal radiators are the traditional radiator format — a wider-than-tall panel fixed to the wall, typically positioned below a window or along a lower section of wall. The horizontal orientation counteracts cold air falling from glass and windows, helping to heat the room from floor level up. They suit rooms with ample horizontal wall space: living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens and dining rooms. Most models connect to the central heating system via valves at either end, with plumbed, electric and dual fuel variants available across the range. Horizontal radiators are available in single-panel, double-panel and double-panel-double-convector (type 22) configurations. Single-panel radiators are the most compact option, suited to smaller rooms or supplementary heating; double-panel and type 22 models output significantly more heat for the same width, making them better suited to larger rooms or rooms that are difficult to heat.

Panel Types, Sizes and Finishes

Horizontal radiators in this range cover widths from 400 mm through to 1600 mm or wider, with heights typically ranging from 300 mm to 900 mm. Output is measured in BTUs — always calculate the required output for the room dimensions before selecting a model, as an undersized radiator will not heat the room adequately. Finishes include white, anthracite, matt black and chrome, with some ranges also available in brushed brass and brushed gold.
