Steel baths are made from pressed steel sheet with a vitreous enamel (glass) coating fused to the surface at high temperature. This enamel coat gives steel baths their glossy white finish — and also what makes the surface harder and more scratch-resistant than acrylic. With 26 steel baths in the range, Bathroom Republic stocks single-ended models in the sizes that suit most UK alcove bathrooms, typically 1500mm, 1600mm and 1700mm in length and 700mm or 750mm in width. The pressed steel construction means the bath holds its shape permanently and will not flex under load, unlike thinner acrylic shells.
The main trade-off with steel baths is weight. A steel bath typically weighs 35–55kg empty — three to four times heavier than an acrylic equivalent — so floor load and installation access are practical considerations before purchasing. Upper-floor installations in older UK homes with standard timber-joist construction may need structural assessment first. Once installed, steel baths are low-maintenance: the enamel surface cleans easily, resists bath products and common cleaning agents, and retains heat longer than acrylic once the bath is filled — a genuine advantage if you prefer a longer soak. To complete the installation, pair with a bath panel and bath taps.
