What Is a Bathroom Towel Shelf?

A towel shelf is a wall-mounted bathroom storage solution designed to keep folded or rolled towels organised and within easy reach. Unlike a standard towel rail, which is primarily used to hang towels, a bathroom towel shelf provides a raised storage surface for clean towels without taking up valuable floor space.

Bathroom towel shelves can be particularly useful in smaller bathrooms, cloakrooms and en-suites where cupboard storage is limited. They can be positioned near a basin, bath or shower to keep fresh towels accessible while helping maintain a tidy bathroom. For other fittings around the basin area, browse our basin accessories.

Towel Shelf or Towel Rail?

A towel shelf is best suited to storing folded or rolled towels, while a towel rail is designed for hanging towels between uses. Depending on the bathroom layout, the two can also be used together — with a shelf providing storage for clean towels and a rail providing space for towels currently in use.

If you prefer a traditional hanging solution, browse our towel rails and rings. For smaller accessories that can provide additional hanging space, see our robe hooks.

Where Should a Towel Shelf Be Positioned?

Choose a position that keeps towels easy to reach without obstructing doors, bathroom furniture or other fittings. Common locations include beside the basin, near the bath or shower, or above a WC where unused wall space can provide additional bathroom storage.

Before installation, check the dimensions of the shelf, available wall space and the suitability of the wall and fixings. If the shelf includes an integrated towel rail or hanging section, also allow enough clearance below the unit for towels to hang comfortably. For other wall-mounted accessories, browse our robe hooks.

Using Towel Shelves for Bathroom Storage

A bathroom shelf with towel storage can help keep clean towels separate from those currently in use. Folded or rolled towels can be arranged on the shelf, while nearby hooks or rails can provide additional hanging space for hand towels and bath towels. You can also compare our towel rails and rings if you need more hanging space.
