Furniture & Vanity Unit Combinations
View allWhat Is a Freestanding Vanity Unit?
A freestanding vanity unit is a floor-standing piece of bathroom furniture that combines a basin with built-in storage below. Unlike wall hung units, freestanding models rest directly on the floor and require no wall fixings to carry the unit's weight — making them a straightforward choice for bathrooms where the wall construction isn't suitable for heavy wall-mounted fittings, or where a traditional, furniture-style look is preferred. Most freestanding vanity units include hinged cupboard doors or soft-close drawers, with some ranges offering a combination of both. The basin sits on top of or is integrated into the carcass, and installation is generally manageable without specialist help — the unit simply sits in position and plumbing connections run from below or through the back panel.
Sizes, Finishes and What to Check Before Buying
Freestanding vanity units are available in widths from 400 mm for a cloakroom to 1200 mm for a double basin. Before ordering, measure the available floor space and confirm whether your waste pipe exits through the floor or the wall — this affects which unit designs are compatible with your layout. Most units are built from moisture-resistant MDF and come flat-pack with all fixings included. Finishes cover white gloss, light grey, dark grey, anthracite, dark oak and more — most ranges also offer handles in chrome, matt black and brushed brass. Check the tap hole count on your chosen unit before pairing it with a tap; most freestanding units take a single central tap hole for a mono mixer. Browse Wall Hung Vanity Units if a floating finish is preferred, or see Vanity & WC Combinations to pair your vanity with a toilet from the same range.
