Choosing a Radiator Type

The right radiator type depends primarily on your available wall space, room size, and heat output requirement. Vertical radiators use height rather than width to deliver the required BTU output — well suited to bathrooms, hallways and rooms where horizontal wall space is taken up by windows, doors or furniture. Horizontal radiators are the conventional choice, typically positioned below a window to offset cold air falling from the glass and to heat the room from the floor up. Column radiators suit period properties and larger rooms, delivering high BTU output with a traditional multi-column profile. Designer radiators prioritise visual impact alongside heat output, with sculptural profiles available in a range of statement finishes.

Plumbed, Electric and Dual Fuel

Most radiator types are available in plumbed (central heating), electric, and dual fuel variants. Plumbed radiators connect to your central heating system and are the most cost-effective option for rooms on the heating circuit. Electric radiators operate independently and are the practical choice for rooms without a heating feed — such as loft conversions or extensions. Dual fuel radiators can run from the central heating system in winter and switch to an independent electric element for use outside the heating season, making them a flexible year-round option for bathrooms and en-suites.
