When Bi-fold Is the Right Door Choice

A bi-fold door — sometimes called a folding shower door — hinges at the centre and folds in half as it opens. It needs a small amount of clearance in front of the enclosure (typically 150mm–200mm) but significantly less than a pivot door. If you have enough space for a small outward fold but not enough for a full pivot swing, a bi-fold door is the practical middle option.

Bi-fold vs Sliding — The Key Difference

A sliding door requires no clearance in front but has a track running along the top and bottom of the enclosure opening. In a narrow recess, the internal shower width after the sliding track is fitted can feel noticeably tighter than the nominal enclosure size suggests. A bi-fold door has no horizontal track across the opening — the door folds to the side, keeping the full internal width accessible when you step in. For recess widths under 900mm where you want maximum internal space, a bi-fold is worth choosing over a sliding door for this reason.
