What Makes a Shower Tray Low Profile?
A low profile shower tray sits closer to the floor than a standard tray. Where a conventional tray typically stands 90mm or more above the subfloor, low profile trays in this range measure 52mm in height. The reduced height creates a more open, level-access look and makes stepping in easier. The trade-off is that the waste trap beneath the tray needs space to sit — either in a raised floor section or a suspended timber floor with a void below the boards.
Three Shapes in the Low Profile Range
- Low profile square shower trays — equal-sided (800mm × 800mm or 900mm × 900mm); pair with square, bi-fold square or sliding door square enclosures.
- Low profile rectangular shower trays — asymmetric dimensions (e.g., 1200mm × 800mm or 1400mm × 900mm); suit alcove enclosures and walk-in configurations.
- Low profile quadrant shower trays — quarter-circle shape; required for quadrant and offset quadrant corner enclosures.
Does Your Floor Have the Void Space?
Before ordering, check what is beneath your bathroom floor. A 52mm tray still requires a standard 90mm deep-body waste trap to sit somewhere — either in a pre-formed recess in a solid concrete floor, a purpose-built riser kit, or a suspended timber floor with enough void below. If your floor is solid with no void and no riser, a standard-height tray is the simpler option. Tray dimensions must match your enclosure exactly — measure both width and depth before ordering.
